76 Sandaka suttaṃ
Evaṃ me sutaṃ: ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kosambiyaṃ viharati ghositārāme. Tena kho pana samayena sandako paribbājako pilakkha guhāyaṃ paṭivasati mahatiyā paribbājakaparisāya saddhiṃ pañcamattehi paribbājakasatehi. Atha kho āyasmā ānando sāyanhasamayaṃ patisallānā vuṭṭhito bhikkhū āmantesi ’āyāmāvuso yena devakaṭasobbho1 tenupasaṅkamissāma guhādassanāyā’ti. Evamāvusoti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato ānandassa paccassosuṃ. Atha kho āyasmā ānando sambahulehi bhikkhūhi saddhiṃ yena devakaṭasobbho tenupasaṅkami. Tena kho pana samayena sandako paribbājako mahatiyā paribbājakaparisāya saddhiṃ nisinno hoti unnādiniyā uccāsaddamahāsaddāya2 anekavihitaṃ tiracchānakathaṃ kathentiyā. Seyyathīdaṃ: rājakathaṃ corakathaṃ mahāmattakataṃ senākathaṃ bhayakathaṃ yuddhakathaṃ annakathaṃ pānakathaṃ vatthakathaṃ yānakathaṃ sayanakathaṃ mālākathaṃ gandhakathaṃ ñātikathaṃ gāmakathaṃ nigamakathaṃ nagarakathaṃ janapadakathaṃ itthikathaṃ purisakathaṃ3 sūrakathaṃ visikhākathaṃ kumbhaṭṭhānakathaṃ pubbapetakathaṃ nānattakathaṃ lokakkhāyikaṃ samuddakkhāyikaṃ [PTS Page 514] [\q 514/] itibhavābhavakathaṃ iti vā.
Addasā kho sandako paribbājako āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ dūratova āgacchantaṃ. Disvāna sakaṃ parisaṃ saṇṭhapesi4 appasaddā bhonto hontu, mā bhonto saddamakattha, ayaṃ samaṇassa gotamassa sāvako āgacchati samaṇo ānando. Yāvatā kho pana samaṇassa gotamassa sāvakā kosambiyaṃ paṭivasanti ayaṃ tesaṃ aññataro samaṇo ānando. Appasaddakāmā kho pana te āyasmanto appasaddavinītā appasaddassa vaṇṇavādino, appevanāma appasaddaṃ parisaṃ viditvā upasaṅkamitabbaṃ maññeyyā’ti. Atha kho te paribbājakā tuṇhī ahesuṃ.
Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena sandako paribbājako tenupasaṅkami. Atha kho sandako paribbājako āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ etadavoca: etu kho bhavaṃ ānando, svāgataṃ5 bhoto ānandassa cirassaṃ kho bhavaṃ ānando imaṃ pariyāyamakāsi yadidaṃ idhāgamanāya,

Nisīdatu bhavaṃ ānando, idamāsanaṃ paññattanti. Nisīdi kho āyasmā ānando paññatte āsane. Sandakopi kho paribbājako aññataraṃ nīcaṃ āsanaṃ gahetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho sandakaṃ paribbājakaṃ āyasmā ānando etadavoca: ’kāyanuttha sandaka etarahi kathāya sannisinnā, kā ca pana vo antarā kathā vippakatā’ti. Tiṭṭhatesā bho ānanda kathā, yāya mayaṃ etarahi kathāya sannisinnā. Nesā bhoto ānandassa kathā dullabhā bhavissati pacchāpi savaṇāya. Sādhu vata bhavantaṃyeva ānandaṃ paṭibhātu sake ācariyake dhammī kathā’ti. Tena hi sandaka suṇāhi, sādhukaṃ manasi karohi, bhāsissāmī’ti. Evaṃ bhoti kho sandako paribbājako āyasmato ānandassa paccassosi. Āyasmā ānando etadavoca:
’Cattārome sandaka tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena abrahmacariyavāsā akkhātā, cattāri ca anassāsikāni brahmacariyāni akkhātāni, yattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ na vaseyya vasanto vā1 na ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusala’nti.
Katame pana te bho ānanda tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena cattāro abrahmacariyavāsā akkhātā, yattha [PTS Page 515] [\q 515/] viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ na vaseyya vasanto vā1 na ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalanti:
Idha sandaka ekacco satthā evaṃvādī hoti evaṃdiṭṭhī: ’natthi dinnaṃ natthi yiṭṭhaṃ natthi hutaṃ natthi sukaṭadukkaṭānaṃ kammānaṃ phalaṃ vipāko natthi ayaṃ loko natthi paro loko natthi mātā natthi pitā natthi sattā opapātikā natthi loke samaṇabrāhmaṇā sammaggatā sammāpaṭipannā ye imañca lokaṃ parañca lokaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedenti, cātummahābhūtiko2 ayaṃ puriso yadā kālaṃ karoti paṭhavī paṭhavīkāyaṃ anupeti anupagacchati. Vāyo vāyokāyaṃ anupeti anupagacchati, ākāsaṃ indriyāni saṅkamanti, āsandi pañcamā purisā mataṃ ādāya gacchanti, yāva āḷāhanā padāni paññāyanti, kāpotakāni aṭṭhīni bhavanti, bhassantāhutiyo, dattupaññattaṃ yadidaṃ dānaṃ, tesaṃ tucchaṃ musā vilāpo ye keci atthikavādaṃ vadanti, bāle ca paṇḍite ca kāyassa bhedā ucchijjanti, vinassanti, na honti parammaraṇāti. Atirekaṃ kho panimassa bhoto satthuno naggiyaṃ muṇḍiyaṃ ukkuṭikappadhānaṃ kesamassulocanaṃ, yohaṃ puttasambādhasayanaṃ ajjhāvasanto kāsikacandanaṃ paccanubhonto mālāgandhavilepanaṃ dhārento jātarūparajataṃ sādiyanto iminā bhotā satthārā samasamagatiko bhavissāmi abhisamparāyaṃ, sohaṃ kiṃjānanto kiṃpassanto imasmiṃ satthari brahmacariyaṃ carissāmi, so abrahmacariyaṃ vāso aya’nti iti viditvā tasmā brahmacariyā nibbijja pakkamati. Punacaparaṃ sandaka idhekacco satthā evaṃvādī hoti evaṃdiṭṭhī: ’karato2 kārayato chindato chedāpayato pacato pācayato3 socayato socāpayato kilamato kilamāpayato phandato phandāpayato pāṇamatipātayato adinnaṃ ādiyato sandhiṃ chindato nillopaṃ harato ekāgārikaṃ karoto paripanthe tiṭṭhato paradāraṃ gacchato musābhaṇato, karato2 na karīyati pāpaṃ khurapariyantena cepi cakkena yo imissā paṭhaviyā pāṇe ekamaṃsakhalaṃ4 ekamaṃsapuñjaṃ5 kareyya, natthi tato nidānaṃ pāpaṃ, natthi pāpassa āgamo dakkhiṇañcepi gaṅgāya tīraṃ gaccheyya hananto ghātento chindanto chedāpento pacanto pācento6 natthi tato nidānaṃ pāpaṃ, natthi pāpassa āgamo, uttarañcepi gaṅgāya tīraṃ gaccheyya dadanto dāpento yajanto yājento7 natthi tato nidānaṃ puññaṃ, natthi puññassa āgamo, dānena damena saṃyamena saccavajjena natthi puññaṃ, natthi puññassa āgamo’ti.

Te na iñjanti na viparinamanti.1 Nāññamaññaṃ vyābādhenti. Nālaṃ aññamaññassa sukhāya vā dukkhāya vā sukhadukkhāya vā. Katame satta: paṭhavīkāyo āpokāyo tejokāyo vāyo kāyo sukhe dukkhe jīve sattime. Ime satta kāyā akaṭā akaṭavidhā animmitā animmātā vañjhā kūṭaṭṭhā esikaṭṭhāyiṭṭhitā. Te na iñjanti, na viparinamanti1, nāññamaññaṃ vyābādenti, nālaṃ aññamaññassa sukhāya vā dukkhāya vā sukhadukkhāya vā. Tattha natthi hantā vā ghātetā vā sotā vā sāvetā vā viññātā vā viññāpetā vā yepi tiṇhena satthena sīsaṃ chindati. Na koci kañci jīvitā voropeti. Cuddasa kho panimāni yonipamukhasatasahassāni saṭṭhiñca satāni cha ca satāni. Pañca ca kammuno satāni pañca ca kammāni tīṇi ca kammāni kamme ca aḍḍhakamme ca, dvaṭṭhi paṭipadā, dvaṭṭhantarakappā, chaḷābhijātiyo, aṭṭha purisabhūmiyo, ekūnapaññāsa ājīvasate,1 ekūnapaññāsa paribbājakasate, ekūnapaññāsa [PTS Page 518] [\q 518/] nāgāvāsasate, vīse indriyasate, tiṃse nirayasate, chattiṃsa rajodhātuyo, satta saññīgabbhā, satta asaññīgabbhā, satta nigaṇṭhīgabbhā,2 satta devā, satta mānusā, satta pesācā,3 satta sarā, satta pavuṭā,4 satta papātā, satta papātasatāni, sattasupinā, sattasupinasatāni, cullāsītimahākappuno5 satasahassāni yāni bāle ca paṇḍite ca sandhāvitvā saṃsaritvā dukkhassantaṃ karissanti. Tattha natthi imināhaṃ sīlena vā vatena vā tapena vā brahmacariyena vā aparipakkaṃ vā kammaṃ paripācessāmi, paripakkaṃ vā kammaṃ phussa phussa byantīkarissāmīti6. Hevaṃ natthi doṇamite sukhadukkhe, pariyantakaṭe saṃsāre, natthi hāyanavaḍḍhane, natthi ukkaṃsāvakaṃse. Idha sandaka ekacco satthā sabbaññū sabbadassāvī aparisesaṃ ñāṇadassanaṃ paṭijānāti: carato ca me tiṭṭhato ca suttassa ca jāgarassa ca satataṃ samitaṃ ñāṇadassanaṃ paccupaṭṭhitanti. So suññampi agāraṃ pavisati, piṇḍampi na labhati, kukkuropi ḍasati,1 caṇḍenapi hatthinā samāgacchati, caṇḍenapi assena samāgacchati, caṇḍenapi goṇena samāgacchati, itthiyāpi purisassapi nāmampi gottampi pucchati, gāmassapi nigamassapi nāmampi maggampi pucchati, so kimidanti puṭṭho samāno suññaṃ me agāraṃ pavisitabbaṃ ahosi, tena pāvisiṃ. Imāni kho sandaka tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammā sambuddhena cattāri anassāsikāni brahmacariyāni akkhātāni, yattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ na vaseyya vasanto vā nārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalanti.

Yo pana so bho ānanda satthā kiṃvādī kimakkhāyī yattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ vaseyya, vasanto vā ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalanti.
Idha sandaka tathāgato loke uppajjati ’arahaṃ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathī satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā. So imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiṃ pajaṃ sadevamanussaṃ sayaṃ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti, so dhammaṃ deseti: ādikalyāṇaṃ majjhekalyāṇaṃ pariyosānakalyāṇaṃ sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ pakāseti. Taṃ dhammaṃ suṇāti. Gahapati vā gahapatiputto vā aññatarasmiṃ vā kule paccājāto. So taṃ dhammaṃ sutvā tathāgate saddhaṃ paṭilabhati. So tena saddhāpaṭilābhena samannāgato itipaṭisañcikkhati: sambādho gharāvāso rajāpatho, abbhokāso pabbajjā, nayidaṃ sukaraṃ agāraṃ ajjhāvasatā ekantaparipuṇṇaṃ ekantaparisuddhaṃ saṅkhalikhitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ carituṃ, yannūnāhaṃ kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajeyyanti. So aparena samayena appaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā bhogakkhandhaṃ pahāya appaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya mahantaṃ vā ñātiparivaṭṭaṃ pahāya kesamassuṃ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṃ pabbajati.
So evaṃ pabbajito samāno bhikkhūnaṃ sikkhāsājīvasamāpanno pāṇātipātaṃ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, nihitadaṇḍo nihitasattho lajjī dayāpanno sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati. Adinnādānaṃ pahāya adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti, dinnādāyī dinnapāṭikaṅkhī athenena sucibhūtena attanā viharati. Abrahmacariyaṃ pahāya brahmacārī hoti, ārācārī virato methunā gāmadhammā. Musāvādaṃ pahāya musāvādā paṭivirato hoti, saccavādī saccasandho theto paccayiko avisaṃvādako lokassa. Pisunaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pisunāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, ito sutvā na amutra akkhātā imesaṃ bhedāya, amutra vā sutvā na imesaṃ akkhātā amūsaṃ bhedāya, iti bhinnānaṃ vā sandhātā sahitānaṃ vā anuppadātā, samaggārāmo samaggarato samagganandī samaggakaraṇiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti. Pharusaṃ vācaṃ pahāya pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, yā sā vācā nelā kaṇṇasukhā pemanīyā hadayaṅgamā porī bahujanakantā bahujanamanāpā, tathārūpaṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā hoti. Samphappalāpaṃ pahāya samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti, kālavādī bhūtavādī atthavādī dhammavādī vinayavādī nidhānavatiṃ vācaṃ bhāsitā kālena sāpadesaṃ pariyantavatiṃ atthasaṃhitaṃ.
So bījagāmabhūtagāmasamārambhā paṭivirato hoti. Ekabhattiko hoti rattūparato virato vikālabhojanā. Naccagītavāditavisūkadassanā paṭivirato hoti. Mālāgandhavilepanadhāraṇamaṇḍanavibhūsanaṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti. Uccāsayanamahāsayanā paṭivirato hoti. Jātarūparajatapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti āmakadhaññapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Āmakamaṃsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Itthikumārikapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Dāsidāsapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Ajeḷakapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Kukkuṭasūkarapaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Hatthigavāssavaḷavāpaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Khettavatthupaṭiggahanā paṭivirato hoti. Dūteyyapahīnagamanānuyogā paṭivirato hoti. Kayavikkayā paṭivirato hoti. Tulākūṭakaṃsakuṭamānakūṭā paṭivirato hoti. Ukkoṭanavañcananikatisāciyogā paṭivirato hoti. Chedanavadhabandhanaviparāmosaālopasahasākārā paṭivirato hoti.
So santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihārikena cīvarena, kucchiparihārikena piṇḍapātena, so yena yeneva pakkamati, samādāyeva pakkamati. Seyyathāpi nāma pakkhīsakuṇo yena yeneva ḍeti, sapattabhārova ḍeti. Evamevaṃ bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihārikena cīvarena, kucchiparihārikena piṇḍapātena. Yena yeneva pakkamati samādāyeva pakkamati. So iminā ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ anavajjasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.
So cakkhunā rūpaṃ disvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ cakkhundriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati cakkhundriyaṃ, cakkhundriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.
Sotena saddaṃ sutvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ sotindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati sotindriyaṃ, sotindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.
Ghānena gandhaṃ ghāyitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ ghānindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati ghānindriyaṃ, ghānindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.
Jivhāya rasaṃ sāyitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ jivhindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati jivhindriyaṃ, jivhindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.
Kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṃ phūsitvā na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ kāyindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvarāya paṭipajjati, rakkhati kāyindriyaṃ, kāyindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati.
Manasā dhammaṃ viññāya na nimittaggāhī hoti nānubyañjanaggāhī, yatvādhikaraṇamenaṃ manindriyaṃ asaṃvutaṃ viharantaṃ abhijjhā domanassā pāpakā akusalā dhammā anvāssaveyyuṃ, tassa saṃvaraṃ paṭipajjati, rakkhati manindriyaṃ, manindriye saṃvaraṃ āpajjati. So iminā ariyena indriyasaṃvarena samannāgato ajjhattaṃ abyāsekasukhaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti.
So abhikkante paṭikkante sampajānakārī hoti, ālokite vilokite sampajānakārī hoti, sammiñjite pasārite sampajānakārī hoti, saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇe sampajānakārī hoti, asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajānakārī hoti, uccārapassāvakamme sampajānakārī hoti, gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhībhāve sampajānakārī hoti.
So iminā ca ariyena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena indriyasaṃvarena samannāgato iminā ca ariyena satisampajaññena samannāgato vivittaṃ senāsanaṃ bhajati. Araññaṃ rukkhamūlaṃ pabbataṃ kandaraṃ giriguhaṃ susānaṃ vanapatthaṃ abbhokāsaṃ palālapuñjaṃ.
So pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ panidhāya, parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. So abhijjhaṃ loke pahāya vigatābhijjhena cetasā viharati, abhijjhāya cittaṃ parisodheti. Byāpādapadosaṃ pahāya abyāpannacitto viharati sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī. Byāpādapadosā cittaṃ parisodeti, thīnamiddhaṃ pahāya vigatathīnamiddho viharati ālokasaññī sato sampajāno. Thīnamiddhā cittaṃ parisodheti, uddhaccakukkuccaṃ pahāya anuddhato viharati ajjhattaṃ vūpasantacitto. Uddhaccakukkuccā cittaṃ parisodheti. Vicikicchaṃ pahāya tiṇṇavicikiccho viharati akathaṅkathī kusalesu dhammesu. Vicikicchāya cittaṃ parisodheti.
So ime pañca nīvaraṇe pahāya cetaso upakkilese paññāya dubbalīkaraṇe, vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ pītikhaṃ paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. Yasmiṃ kho sandaka satthari sāvako evarūpaṃ uḷāraṃ visesaṃ1 adhigacchati. Tattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ vaseyya, vasanto vā ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalaṃ.
Puna ca paraṃ sandaka bhikkhu pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti. Yantaṃ ariyā ācikkhanti: upekkhako satimā sukhavihārīti taṃ tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. Yasmiṃ kho sandaka satthari sāvako evarūpaṃ uḷāraṃ visesaṃ adhigacchati. Tattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ vaseyya, vasanto vā ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalaṃ.
Puna ca paraṃ sandaka bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā, pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā adukkhaṃ asukhaṃ2 upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So anekavihitaṃ pubbenivāsaṃ anussarati, seyyathīdaṃ: ekampi jātiṃ dvepi jātiyo, tissopi jātiyo catassopi jātiyo pañcapi jātiyo dasapi jātiyo vīsatimpi jātiyo tiṃsampi jātiyo cattārīsampi jātiyo paññāsampi jātiyo jātisatampi jātisahassampi jātisatasahassampi anekepi saṃvaṭṭakappe anekepi vivaṭṭakappe anekepi saṃvaṭṭavivaṭṭakappe amutrāsiṃ evannāmo evaṅgotto evaṃvaṇṇo evamāhāro evaṃsukhadukkhapaṭisaṃvedī evamāyupariyanto. So tato cuto amutra udapādiṃ5 tatrāpāsiṃ evannāmo evaṅgotto evaṃvaṇṇo evamāhāro evaṃsukhadukkhapaṭisaṃvedī evamāyupariyanto. So tato cuto idhūpapanno’ti. Iti sākāraṃ sauddesaṃ anekavihitaṃ pubbenivāsaṃ anussarati. Yasmiṃ kho sandaka satthari sāvako evarūpaṃ uḷāraṃ visesaṃ adhigacchati. Tattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ vaseyya, vasanto vā ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalaṃ.
So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte4 sattānaṃ cutūpapātañāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmeti. So dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne, hine paṇīte suvaṇṇe dubbaṇṇe sugate duggate yathākammūpage satte pajānāti. Yasmiṃ kho sandaka satthari sāvako evarūpaṃ uḷāraṃ visesaṃ adhigacchati. Tattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ vaseyya, vasanto vā ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalaṃ.

So evaṃ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte āsavānaṃ khayañāṇāya cittaṃ abhininnāmeti. So idaṃ dukkhanti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti. Ayaṃ dukkhasamudayoti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti. Ayaṃ dukkhanirodhoti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti. Ayaṃ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadāti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti. Ime āsavāti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti ayaṃ āsavasamudayoti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti. Ayaṃ āsavanirodhoti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti. Ayaṃ āsavanirodhagāminī paṭipadāti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti. Tassa evaṃ jānato evaṃ passato kāmāsavāpi cittaṃ vimuccati. Bhavāsavāpi cittaṃ vimuccati. Avijjāsavāpi cittaṃ vimuccati. Vimuttasmiṃ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṃ hoti. Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, kataṃ karaṇīyaṃ, nāparaṃ itthattāyāti pajānāti. Yasmiṃ kho sandaka satthari sāvako evarūpaṃ uḷāraṃ visesaṃ adhigacchati. Tattha viññū puriso sasakkaṃ brahmacariyaṃ vaseyya, vasanto vā ārādheyya ñāyaṃ dhammaṃ kusalanti.
Yo pana so bho ānanda bhikkhu arahaṃ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaññojano sammadaññā vimutto. Paribhuñjeyya [PTS Page 523] [\q 523/] so kāmeti.
Yo so sandaka bhikkhu arahaṃ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaññojano sammadaññā vimutto. Abhabbo so pañcaṭhānāni ajjhācarituṃ: abhabbo khīṇāsavo bhikkhu sañcicca pāṇaṃ jīvitā voropetuṃ, abhabbo khīṇāsavo bhikkhu adinnaṃ theyyasaṅkhātaṃ ādātuṃ, abhabbo khīṇāsavo bhikkhu methunaṃ dhammaṃ patisevetuṃ, abhabbo khīṇāsavo bhikkhu sampajānamusā bhāsituṃ, abhabbo khīṇāsavo bhikkhu sannidhikārakaṃ kāme paribhuñjituṃ seyyathāpi pubbe agāriyabhūto. Yo so sandaka bhikkhu arahaṃ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaññojano sammadaññā vimutto. Abhabbo so imāni pañcaṭhānāni ajjhācaritu’nti.

Seyyathāpi sandaka purisassa hatthapādā chinnā, tassa carato ceva tiṭṭhato ca suttassa ca jāgarassa ca satataṃ samitaṃ chinnā va hatthapādā. Api ca kho pana taṃ paccavekkhamāno jānāti: chinnā me hatthapādāti. Evameva kho sandaka yo so bhikkhu arahaṃ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaññojano sammadaññā vimutto. Tassa carato ceva tiṭṭhato ca suttassa ca jāgarassa ca satataṃ samitaṃ khīṇāva āsavā. Api ca kho naṃ paccavekkhamāno jānāti: khīṇā me āsavāti.

Kīva bahukā pana bho ānanda imasmiṃ dhammavinaye niyyātāroti. ’Na kho sandaka ekaṃ yeva sataṃ na dve satāni na tīṇi satāni na cattāri satāni na pañca satāni. Atha kho hiyyova ye imasmiṃ dhammavinaye niyyātāro’ti. Acchariyaṃ bho ānanda, abbhutaṃ bho ānanda, na ca nāma sadhammokkaṃsanā bhavissati na paradhammāvasādanā1 āyatane ca dhammadesanā. Tāva [PTS Page 524] [\q 524/] bahukā ca niyyātāro paññāyissanti. Ime panā’jīvakā puttamatāya puttā. Attānañceva ukkaṃsenti, pare ca vambhenti. Tayo ceva niyyātāro paññāpenti. Seyyathīdaṃ: ’nandaṃ vacchaṃ, kisaṃ saṅkiccaṃ, makkhaligosāla’nti.
Atha kho sandako paribbājako sakaṃ parisaṃ āmantesi: ’carantu bhonto samaṇe gotame brahmacariyavāso, nadāni sukaraṃ amhehi lābhasakkārasiloke pariccajitu’nti. Itihidaṃ sandako paribbājako sakaṃ parisaṃ uyyojesi bhagavati brahmacariyeti.
