Evaṃ me sutaṃ: ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhu āmantesi bhikkhavoti. Bhadanteti te bhikkhu bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

Sappurisadhammañca vo bhikkhave, desessāmi asappurisadhammañca. Taṃ suṇātha sādhukaṃ manasi karotha. Bhāsissāmīti.

Evaṃ bhanteti kho te bhikkhu bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

Katamo ca bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo: idha bhikkhave, asappuriso uccākulā pabbajito hoti. So iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khombhi uccākulā pabbajito ime panaññe bhikkhū na uccākulā pabbajitāti. So tāya uccākulīnatāya attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Sappuriso ca kho bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’na kho uccākulīnatāya lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti. Dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti. Mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti. No cepi uccākulā pabbajito hoti, so ca hoti dhammānudhammapaṭipanno sāmicipaṭipanno [PTS Page 038] [\q 38/] anudhammacārī. So tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṃsoti. Puna ca paraṃ bhikkhave, asappuriso mahākulā pabbajito hoti so iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khombhi mahābhogakulā pabbajito ime panaññe bhikkhū na mahābhogakulā pabbajitāti. So tāya mahābhogakulīnatāya attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Sappuriso ca kho bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’na kho mahābhogakulīnatāya lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti.

Dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti. Mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti. No cepi mahābhotakulā pabbajito hoti, so ca hoti dhammānudhammapaṭipanno sāmicipaṭipanno anudhammacārī. So tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṃsoti. So paṭipadaṃ yeva antaraṃ karitvā tāya mahābhogakulīnatāya nevattānukkaṃseti. Na paraṃ vambheti. Ayaṃ bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo. Uḷārabhogakulā pabbajito hoti. So iti paṭisañcikkhati:

’Ahaṃ khombhi uḷārabhogakulā pabbajito, ime panaññe bhikkhū na uḷārabhogakulā pabbajitā’ti. So tāya uḷārabhogatāya attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti.

Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Sappuriso ca kho bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’na kho uḷārabhogatāya lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti.

So tena ñātattena2 attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Sappuriso ca bhikkhave, itipaṭisañcikkhati: ’na kho ñātattena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti. Puna ca paraṃ bhikkhave, asappuriso lābhī hoti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṃ. So iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khomhi lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṃ. Ime panaññe bhikkhū na lābhino cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārāna’nti. So tena lābhena attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Sappuriso ca kho bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’na kho lābhena lobhadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti, dosadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti, mohadhammā vā parikkhayaṃ gacchanti. No cepi lābhi hoti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṃ so ca hoti dhammānudhammapaṭipanno sāmicipaṭipanno anudhammacārī, so tattha pujjo, so tattha pāsaṃso’ti. So iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khomhi paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū na paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyā lābhino’ti. So tāya paṭhamajjhānasamāpattiyā attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Puna ca paraṃ bhikkhave, asappuriso vitakkavicārānaṃ vūpasamā ajjhattaṃ sampasādanaṃ cetaso ekodibhāvaṃ avitakkaṃ avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ pītisukhaṃ dutiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno, sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṃvedeti. Yaṃ taṃ ariyā ācikkhanti: upekkhako satimā sukhavihārīti, tatiyaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamā adukkhaṃ asukhaṃ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṃ catutthaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharati. So iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khomhi catutthajjhānasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū catutthajjhānasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti. So tāya catutthajjhānasamāpattiyā attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Sappuriso ca kho bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’catutthajjhānasamāpattiyāpi kho atammayatā vuttā bhagavatā. Yena yena hi maññanti tato taṃ hoti aññathā’ti. So atammayataṃyeva antaraṃ karitvā tāya catutthajajhānasamāpattiyā neva attānukkaṃseti, na paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.

Puna ca paraṃ bhikkhave, asappuriso sabbaso rūpasaññānaṃ samatikkamā paṭighasaññānaṃ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṃ amanasikārā ananto ākāsoti ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati. So iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khomhi ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā lābhī. Ime panaññe bhikkhū ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti. So tāya ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā attānukkaṃseti, paraṃvambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo.

Sappuriso ca kho bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati:

Ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā’pi atammayatā vuttā bhagavatā. Yena yena hi maññanti, tato taṃ hoti aññathā’ti. So atammayataṃyeva antaraṃ karitvā tāya ākāsānañcāyatanasamāpattiyā neva attānukkaṃseti, na paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, sappurisadhammo.

Puna ca paraṃ bhikkhave, asappuriso sabbaso viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ samatikkamma1 natthi kiñcīti ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati. So iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khomhi ākiñcaññāyatanasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū ākiñcaññāyatanasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti. So tāya ākiñcaññāyatanasamāpattiyā attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Sappuriso ca kho bhikkhave, iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ākiñcaññāyatanasamāpattiyāpi kho atammayatā vuttā bhagavatā. Yena yena hi maññanti tato taṃ hoti aññathā’ti. Puna ca paraṃ bhikkhave, asappuriso sabbaso ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ samatikkamma1 nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati. So iti paṭisañcikkhati: ’ahaṃ khomhi nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyā lābhī, ime panaññe bhikkhū nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyā na lābhino’ti. So tāya nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasamāpattiyā attānukkaṃseti, paraṃ vambheti. Ayampi bhikkhave, asappurisadhammo. Idamavoca bhagavā, attamanā te bhikkhu bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.
