1. Atha kho dve brāhmaṇā jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayo anuppattā vīsaṃ vassasatikā jātiyā, yena bhagavā tenupasaṃkamiṃsu. Upasaṃkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodiṃsu. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sārāṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdiṃsu. Ekamantaṃ nisinnā kho te brāhmaṇā bhagavantaṃ etadavocuṃ: ’mayamassu bho gotama brāhmaṇā jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayo anuppattā vīsaṃ vassasatikā jātiyā. Te ca’mhā akatakalyāṇā akatakusalā akatabhīruttāṇā. Ovadatu no bhavaṃ gotamo, anusāsatu no bhavaṃ gotamo yaṃ amhākaṃ assa dīgharattaṃ hitāya sukhāyā’ti.

Upaniyyati kho ayaṃ brāhmaṇā loko jarāya vyādhinā maraṇena, evaṃ upaniyyamāne kho brāhmaṇā loke jarāya vyādhinā maraṇena, yo idha kāyena saṃyamo, vācāya saṃyamo, manasā saṃyamo, taṃ tassa petassa tāṇañca lenañca dīpañca saraṇañca parāyaṇañcā’ti.

1. Upanīyati jīvitamappamāyu jarūpanītassa na santi tāṇā.

Etaṃ bhayaṃ maraṇe pekkhamāno puññāni kayirātha sukhāvahāni.

2. Yodha kāyena saññamo vācāya uda cetasā,

Taṃ tassa petassa sukhāya hoti yaṃ jīvamāno pakaroti puññanti.

4. Evaṃ ādipito loko jarāya maraṇena ca,

Nīharethe’va dānena dinnaṃ hoti sunīhaṭaṃ.

5. Yo’dha kāyena saññamo vācāya uda cetasā,

Taṃ tassa petassa sukhāya hoti yaṃ jīvamāno pakaroti puññanti.

Dose pahīṇe nevattavyābādhāyapi ceteti. Na paravyābādhāyapi ceteti. Na ubhayavyābādhāyapi ceteti. Na cetasikaṃ dukkhaṃ domanassaṃ paṭisaṃvedeti. Evamevaṃ bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṃ bhagavantaṃ gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatanti.

Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho so brāhmaṇamahāsālo bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: ’sutaṃ metaṃ bho gotama pubbakānaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ vuddhānaṃ mahallakānaṃ ācariyapācariyānaṃ bhāsamānānaṃ: ’pubbassudaṃ ayaṃ loko avīcimaññe phuṭo hoti manussehi, kukkuṭasampātikā gāmanigamarājadhāniyo’ti. Ko nu kho bho gotama hetu, ko paccayo yenetarahi manussānaṃ khayo hoti, tanuttaṃ paññāyati, gāmāpi agāmā [PTS Page 160] honti, nigamā’pi anigamā honti, nagarā’pi anagarā honti, janapadā’pi ajanapadā hontī’ti.

Etarahi brāhmaṇa manussā adhammarāgarattā visamalobhābhibhūtā micchādhammaparetā te adhammarāgarattā visamalobhābhibhūtā micchādhammaparetā tiṇhāni satthāni gahetvā

Aññamaññaṃ jīvitā voropenti. Tena bahū manussā kālaṃ karonti. Ayampi kho brāhmaṇa hetu, ayaṃ paccayo yenetarahi manussānaṃ khayo hoti, tanuttaṃ paññāyati, gāmā’pi agāmā honti, nigamā’pi anigamā honti, nagarā’pi anagarā honti, janapadā’pi ajanapadā honti.

Puna ca paraṃ brāhmaṇa etarahi manussā adhammarāgarattā visamalobhābhibhūtā micchādhammaparetā. Tesaṃ adhammarāgarattānaṃ visamalobhābhibhūtānaṃ micchādhammaparetānaṃ devo na sammā dhāraṃ anuppavecchati. Tena dubbhikkhaṃ hoti dussassaṃ setaṭṭhikaṃ salākāvuttaṃ. Tena bahū manussā kālaṃ karonti. Ayampi kho brāhmaṇa hetu, ayaṃ paccayo yenetarahi manussānaṃ khayo hoti, tanuttaṃ paññāyati, gāmā’pi agāmā honti. Nigamā’pi anigamā honti, nagarā’pi anagarā honti, janapadā’pi ajanapadā honti.

Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: ’sutaṃ metaṃ bho gotama, ’samaṇo gotamo evamāha: mayhameva dānaṃ [PTS Page 161] dātabbaṃ, nāññesaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, mayhameva sāvakānaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, nāññesaṃ sāvakānaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, mayhameva dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ, nāññesaṃ dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ. Ye te bho gotama evamāhaṃsu: ’samaṇo gotamo evamāha: mayhameva dānaṃ dātabbaṃ nāññesaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, mayhameva sāvakānaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ nāññesaṃ sāvakānaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, mayhameva dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ’ nāññesaṃ dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ, mayhameva sāvakānaṃ dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ, nāññesaṃ sāvakānaṃ dinnaṃ mahapphalanti’. Kacci te bhoto gotamassa vuttavādino? Na ca bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ abhūtena abbhācikkhanti? Dhammassa cā’nudhammaṃ vyākaronti? Na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānupāto gārayhaṃ ṭhānaṃ āgacchati? Anabbhakkhātukāmā hi mayaṃ bhavantaṃ gotama’nti.

Ye te vaccha evamāhaṃsu: ’samaṇo gotamo evamāha: mayhameva dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, nāññesaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, gotama mayhameva sāvakānaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, nāññesaṃ sāvakānaṃ dānaṃ dātabbaṃ, mayhameva dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ, nāññesaṃ dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ, hi mayhameva sāvakānaṃ dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ, nāññesaṃ sāvakānaṃ dinnaṃ mahapphala’nti, na me te vuttavādino, abbhācikkhanti ca pana maṃ te asatā abhūtena. Yo kho vaccha paraṃ dānaṃ dadantaṃ vāreti, so tiṇṇaṃ antarāyakaro hoti, tiṇṇaṃ pāripanthiko. Katamesaṃ tiṇṇaṃ: dāyakassa puññantarāyakaro hoti, paṭiggāhakānaṃ lābhantarāyakaro hoti. Pubbeva kho panassa attā khato ca hoti upahato ca. Yo kho vaccha paraṃ dānaṃ dadantaṃ vāreti, so imesaṃ tiṇṇaṃ antarāyakaro hoti, tiṇṇaṃ pāripanthiko.

Ahaṃ kho pana vaccha evaṃ vadāmi: ’yepi te candanikāya vā oligalle vā pāṇā, tatra’pi yo thālidhovanaṃ vā sarāvadhovanaṃ vā chaḍḍeti. Ye tattha pāṇā, te tena yāpentū’ti. Tato nidānampahaṃ vaccha puññassa āgamaṃ vadāmi. Ko pana vādo manussabhūte. Api cāhaṃ vaccha sīlavato dinnaṃ mahapphalaṃ vadāmi, no tathā dussīle. So ca hoti, pañcaṅgavippahīṇo pañcaṅgasamannāgato. Katamehi pañcahaṅgehi samannāgato hoti: asekkhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti. Kammāsāsu sarūpāsu gosu pārevatāsu vā.

Yathā kathaṃ pana brāhmaṇa, brāhmaṇā brāhmaṇaṃ tevijjaṃ paññāpentī’ti? Idha bho gotama brāhmaṇo ubhato sujāto hoti mātito ca pitito ca saṃsuddhagahaṇiko yāva sattamā pitāmahayugā akkhitto anupakkuṭṭho jātivādena. Ajjhāyako mantadharo tiṇṇaṃ vedānaṃ pāragū sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṃ sākkharappabhedānaṃ itihāsapañcamānaṃ. Padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayoti. Taṃ kiṃ maññasi brāhmaṇa, iccāyaṃ evaṃ sante ekasārīrikā vā puññapaṭipadā hoti anekasārīrikā vā, yadidaṃ pabbajjādhikaraṇanti? Iccāyampi bho gotama, evaṃ sante anekasārīrikā puññapaṭipadā hoti, yadidaṃ pabbajjādhikaraṇanti.

Evaṃ vutte āyasmā ānando saṅgāravaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ etadavoca: imāsaṃ te brāhmaṇa, dvinnaṃ paṭipadānaṃ katamā paṭipadā khamati, appaṭṭhatarā ca appasamārambhatarā ca mahapphalatarā ca mahānisaṃsatarā cāti? Paṭhaviyā’pi ummujjanimmujjaṃ karoti seyyathā’pi udake, udake’pi abhijjamāne gacchati seyyathā’pi paṭhaviyaṃ. Ākāse’pi pallaṅkena kamati seyyathā’pi pakkhī sakuṇo. Paṭhaviyā’pi ummujjanimmujjaṃ karomi seyyathā’pi udake, udake’pi abhijjamāne gacchāmi seyyathāpi paṭhaviyaṃ. Ākāse’pi pallaṅkena kamāmi seyyathā’pi pakkhī sakuṇo. Ime’pi candimasuriye evaṃ mahiddhike evaṃ mahānubhāve pāṇinā parimasāmi, parimajjāmi. Atthi pana bho gotama añño ekabhikkhūpi yo imehi tīhi pāṭihāriyehi samannāgato? Aññatra bhotā gotamenā’ti. Na kho brāhmaṇa ekaññeva sataṃ, na dvesatāni, na tīṇi satāni, na cattāri satāni, na pañcasatāni. Atha kho bhiyyova ye bhikkhū imehi tīhi pāṭihāriyehi samannāgatā’ti. Kahaṃ pana bho gotama etarahi te bhikkhū viharantī’ti? [PTS Page 173] imasmiṃ yeva kho brāhmaṇa bhikkhusaṅghe’ti.

Abhikkantaṃ bho gotama, abhikkantaṃ bho gotama, seyyathāpi bho gotama nikkujjitaṃ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṃ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṃ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṃ dhāreyya, cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhintī’ti. Evamevaṃ bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. Esāhaṃ bhavantaṃ gotamaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca. Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatanti.
