Buddhist Publication Society
For Authentic literature on Theravada Buddhism
The Buddhist Publication Society (BPS), founded in Sri Lanka in 1958, is an approved charity dedicated to making known the teaching of the Buddha. BPS publications generally represent the standpoint of Theravada Buddhism or Southern Buddhism, the oldest living Buddhist tradition of which the Pali Canon gives the most authentic account of what the historical Buddha himself actually taught. In a span of nearly five decades the BPS has become a major Buddhist publisher with hundreds of titles and a field of distribution extending all over the world.
BPS members receive a book and newsletter twice a year. Besides these books, BPS also publishes full-length books as time and circumstances permit. These include standard introductions to Buddhism, translations from the Pali Canon and its commentaries, works on meditation and original contemporary expositions of Buddhist thought. Altogether, our publications constitute a voluminous reference library on Theravada Buddhism.
The BPS headquarters and bookshop is located at the East end of Kandy lake. The BPS bookshop offers a wide variety of Buddhist books on topics such as Buddhist meditation, philosophy, ethics, history, etc. Books for children as well as audio CDs with Dhamma talks are also available. Besides the BPS's own books, there are many books from other publishers such as Wisdom Publications, Pali Text Society, and Motilal Banarsidass.
The BPS bookshop is open from 9 a.m to 4.30 p.m on Monday through Saturday, excepting mercantile holidays.
